Everybody got surprised when Acura announced about the building its new supercar NSX in Ohio. It was something really unexpected, considering the mother country of this brand is Japan, all of their cars were produced in Japan also, and now they are changing the localization. The company now has a supercar production facility in Ohio, it's official name is Performance Manufacturing Center while many call it simply PMC. Honda invested $70 million to transform a building that started out as a shipping facility for suppliers into a showcase facility.
The company has a high number of prototypes-160 models, to test out the assembly process of the new NSX. The biggest part of them will be crushed and scrapped, while the others will be used as test cars for the media, and as demo cars at dealerships. Of course there are some welding and painting robots working on the model, but the biggest part of the working-process is made by workers manually. All the stampings, moldings and extrusions are coming from other Honda facilities or from suppliers.
The engine comes from Honda's nearby engine plant in the city of Anna, where six master builders and two technicians make each one by hand. The tool chests they use are made out of a special plastic that does not scratch or scrape, so that plastic shavings do not contaminate the machined parts.
It could be a great car, but we will wait until supercar's first test drive, then we'll make some conclusions.
